17 Sassafras Ave, Windang
Auction: August 10, 6pm, The Links,
A grand residence with three bedrooms
downstairs plus formal living, dining, kitchen,
informal living and bathroom. Upstairs there are
another two bedrooms, bathroom, lounge/dining
plus kitchenette and verandah. Added to all of
this is a granny flat. Contact Ben Frawley,
Windang is said to have been founded by William
Turnbull who had bought land in 1920 and built
Wyndang House as a family home and guesthouse.
It was adjacent to a property originally known as
Illawarra Farm, which had been granted to David
Allan. It changed to Five Islands Estate when it was
purchased by William Charles Wentworth.
In 1926 the post office attached to the guesthouse
was named Windang Post Office. Windang is an
Aboriginal word meaning ''scene of a fight''.
Tourism and recreational fishing have always been
of major importance in the area on the shores of
Lake Illawarra and by 1920 provision had been made
for campsites at Windang.
On September 11, 1936, work began on the
Windang Bridge. The bridge (replaced in the 1970s)
was to be 320m long with 33 spans, and a 3.6m
clearance located above the mean high water mark.

The owners of this geometric home at Culburra Beach wake up
to water views every morning.
The juxtaposition of geometric
elements was the design
inspiration for a beach house on
Culbur ra Beach headland.
Wanting to rebuild an older
brick veneer house, the client
approached BHI Architects in
Nowra with a sketch for a house
that contrasted curves with
The original house had been
used as a holiday property for 20
years but with a growing family,
the client wanted to build a more
Ross Hill of BHI engaged
builder Jeff Ewers from
Innovative Building Solutions for
the nine-month project.
Ewers and the client worked
closely, taking a hands-on
approach to the building and
design process and sharing a love
''There is so much detail even
on things you can't see like the
roof, guttering and downpipes; it's
all beautifully detailed, inside and
out,'' Hill says.
The house was designed to take
advantage of the sweeping views
to the north and south,
encompassing Warrain Beach, the
horizon and the Tasman sea.
''The view was a priority and
the major view can be seen from
most areas of the house; the
owners have remarked they feel
like they're living on a boat; when
they wake up, they don't see
houses, all they can see is water,''
The home's entry point is
subtly marked by a yellow
Designed to be non-traditional,
the yellow contrasts with the
home's white exterior and creates
a more casual entry point.
The sundeck and garage are
framed by external walls, creating
a rectangular look against the
curved entry ways inside,
capturing framed views through a
series of vertical windows.
Hill says the home's use of
voids helps to emphasise light and
motivated the design of a bridge
link to the entertainment deck.
''The voids work vertically and
the void in the kitchen lets in the
light from above but it also linked
to outside,'' he says.
''The bridge is not a direct link
but more of a transition; it was
something a bit different. We
could have closed it off but we
wanted to keep the space open
The home's combination of
curves and rectangles encouraged
Hill to create an outdoor deck,
reminiscent of the bow of a ship.
Materials like weatherboard
and f ibro were also used to
recreate the beach-house feel.
