Co-owner Sharon Henricson in the Manning St Cafe at Kiama, which was renovated with a French flavour in mind.
A little French flavour
Bringing a taste of France to
Kiama was the inspiration behind
renovations to the Manning St
The business had operated as a
deli, take-away and dine-in eatery
before owners Sharon and Dan
Henricson found the market for
deli items was waning.
Wanting to give the business a
modern look, they decided to
rebrand it as a cafe with a larger
a la carte menu and French
The renovated restaurant is
decked out in shades of royal blue,
crisp white, light green and beige,
all offset by dark blue floral
Wanting to add warmth, the
couple invested in a large timber
bar and tables to accommodate
more diners and enhance the
overall French feel.
Cushions in navy and cream,
vintage wall hangings and low-
hanging light fittings add extra
lashings of French flavour.
The pair also made the decision
to move the coffee-making
facilities, fridges and counter to
the rear of the restaurant to create
optimum dining space.
The removal of display fridges
that housed deli produce created
space for smaller fridges, which
have been organised to create a
designated service point that
doesn't impinge on dining.
Sharon says the restaurant's
renovation has been well-received
by patrons and has encouraged the
Henricsons to make further
They installed dividing curtains
last month at the front and rear of
the restaurant as part of a long-
term goal to promote the cafe as
a private function facility.
The curtains at the front of the
restaurant cordon off the outdoor
area, creating a space for people
to enjoy canapes and cocktails
overlooking the water.
At the rear, the curtains work to
conceal the cooking and service
areas to create a more intimate,
formal space for seated dining.
''The curtains are great as
they're easy to install and also fit
within the restaurant's overall
fresh French look,'' Sharon says.
''They keep the warmth within
the place and allow us to
transform the cafe into a private
The owners opted to complete
the renovations in just two days to
avoid inconveniencing patrons but
they weren't planning on having
son Finn just six weeks before.
''We knew we wanted to get it
done in two days but we thought
having Finn would made it
tricky,'' Sharon jokes.
''We were here until midnight
every night but we were lucky
because he slept most of the time
so it worked well.''
The short renovation period
also meant Sharon had to make
design concessions including
abandoning her dream of
installing wooden floorboards.
''It would have cost $12,000
and we would have had to shut for
seven days,'' she says.
''We didn't want to do that and
how many people go into a
restaurant and look at the floor
anyway?'' EMMA SPILLETT

Flinders is one of the Illawarra's newest and fastest-
growing suburbs, named after Matthew Flinders.
Flinders and George Bass were the first Europeans to
set foot in the Shellharbour area in 1796.
The land was once part of what the Government
labelled site 7200, land rezoned from rural to urban
in 1978 and designated by the housing commission
to accommodate 26,000 people.
The subdivision went ahead but primarily under

Typical of the new suburbs of the Shellharbour
area, half the residents are aged under 25. The
primary school opened in 2004 with land next to it
designated for a high school.
The number of Flinders residents is expected to
increase from 4000 to about 5000 by 2020.
