In the swim of things
Pools, whether a simple in-ground version or a fancy one with a separate spa, are becoming more popular with Illawarra residents.
The warmer weather is ensuring people are using their pools
almost year round.
Despite the pristine beaches of
the Illawarra, more households
are taking the dive into private
manufacturers say sales at the
beginning of the new decade
have been ''absolutely
massive'', ''insane'' and
Blue Haven Pools consultant
Alicia Bickett says this has
been ''the biggest summer
without a doubt. Pools are fast
becoming a backyard
Bickett attributes the
increase to one main factor.
The temperature is getting
warmer earlier and staying
''It's almost totally weather-
driven. Last year, kids were
jumping into pools by the end
of August,'' she says.
According to Bickett, the
boom period is before and after
the new year.
''There's always a panic
before grandma comes for
Christmas, and afterwards
families start to unwind and
think 'wouldn't a pool be
nice?','' she says.
The surge hasn't necessarily
meant people are spending big
and Bickett says the region is
definitely still budget-
Watching the wallet has
meant people are looking at
more affordable options such as
swim-spas, which are three-
quarter swimming pool, one-
''They're about half the
price of your average pool,
proving much more cost-
effective to own and run,'' says
Blue Haven Pools spa
consultant Oliver Koltovski.
Keeping it manageable has
also meant salt is the preferred
choice over chlorine.
''The nightmares of algae-
infested waters and smelly
chlorine are gone,'' Bickett
Those on a tight schedule are
opting for the fast installation of
fibreglass rather than concrete
''You can be in the pool
within two days of digging the
hole,'' Independent Pools'
Mark Morgan says.
He says concrete also loses
out against natural stone paving
as it doesn't stain as easily or
heat up under your feet.
But the easiest part about
making a splash in style this
summer is that it all comes
down to personal choice.
Although there has been a
rise in natural, simple layouts
with softer colours, the detailed
landscaping of the classic
resort-style pool is still popular.
''Darker greens, palm trees,
hammocks and elaborate water
features are always a
favourite,'' Bickett says.
For those with slightly
deeper pockets, pools with
plasmas and spas with sound
systems are all part of cooling
''Integrated entertainment is
much more affordable these
days,'' Koltovski says.

Settled in the early 1900s, West Wollongong didn't
really get moving until after World War II.
In the early 1950s, returned servicemen and
steelworks employees were able to buy blocks of
land for £200 (about $400). Three-bedroom homes
weren't in fashion until the 1960s. Until then two-
bedroom weatherboard or fibro homes could be
built for £1300 (around $2600).
Architect-designed homes were almost non-
existent; most dwellings were a standard design,
personalised only by the colour scheme.
West Wollongong today, however, is a well-
established and sought-after suburb because of its
proximity to the city.
